MCU - Watch Order and Ranking

I’m rewatching all the MCU movies in preparation for Endgame. I’m not watching in them in release order. I found something called the Spaghetti Order. After watching, I have some disagreements with it… well, one huge one. So I’ve made a change to my preferred watching order. I think you still have enough time to watch them all before Endgame comes out and not have to watch 6 movies a day. So, here’s my MCU Watch Order: [NOTE: I’m adding Captain Marvel, even though it’s not out on video yet, you can still see it in the theaters…. probably.]

Iron Man (2008)

  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

  • Captain Marvel (2019)

  • Iron Man (2008)

  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)

  • Iron Man 2 (2010)

  • Thor (2011)

  • The Avengers (2012)

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)

  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

  • Doctor Strange (2016)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

  • Ant-Man (2015)

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)

  • Black Panther (2018)

  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)

I’ve tried to keep them as chronological as possible. The mid- and end- credits scene screws that all up though. And DO NOT try to reconcile this with Agents of Shield as there’s a lot between The Winter Soldier, the Dark World, and Age of Ultron.

The main difference between my list and the Spaghetti Order is the placement of Doctor Strange. In the Spaghetti Order, he becomes the master of magical arts in basically no time at all. However, in my order, he has time to learn the mystic arts and my order reconciles him being name dropped in Winter Soldier.

Kevin Fiege explained it away, but I don’t think that works. Several super heroes and a surgeon. I will have to revise this order if they ever come up with Moon Knight (the TV anchor in Cairo mention). For now, I think it makes more sense to give Stephen Strange time to become the Sorcerer Supreme in ability as well as title. Of course… he does have the time stone…

That’s how to watch them, but how good are they? There are hundreds of lists out there and everyone has a different opinion. Probably ones like Iron Man 2 and 3, Spiderman: Homecoming, and The Incredible Hulk are the most controversial with some loving them and some hating them. I’m pretty confident in saying that Thor: The Dark World is almost universally the bottom of the list.

But for me, my least favorites (aside from the aforementioned Dark World are Ant Man and Captain America. Homecoming is also near the bottom with Iron Man 3 down there as well. It’s purely subjective. I don’t enjoy watching them. I’ve seen Avengers probably a hundred times since it’s been released. I watch on plane trips (and I used to travel a lot for work).

But I’ve seen Captain America only 3-4 times and I still fast forward through the entire Captain America sing-along bits. I cringe watching the first half of Homecoming. It just hurts to watch that much teenage angst. I get it, that’s the point. He’s 14. But I still hate having to watch it.

So, my ranking of all the movies.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

  • The Avengers (2012)

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

  • Iron Man (2008)

  • Captain Marvel (2019)

  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

  • Iron Man 2 (2010)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

  • Doctor Strange (2016)

  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)

  • Black Panther (2018)

  • Thor (2011)

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)

  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

  • Ant-Man (2015)

  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)

  • Avengers: Endgame (2019) TBD

It’s not perfect and it’s likely to change depending on my mood. But the ones in the top half of the list are ones I watch over and over. The ones near the bottom, I only watch during a full on rewatch.

P.S. I am writing again. About 6500 words into another novel and it’s going well, not painful at all. I have a bit of a plot point to work out, so we’ll see what happens. And I really need to flesh out some characters. I think I may have to remove a bunch. Just for ease of tracking and to make them seem more real.
